PatchView in Datacentre's

Equipment/Server Provisioning

This is a picture of a IT equipment discovery logo for intelligent cabling Takes the physical server provisioning and network planning to a whole new level and helps you achieve a quick and flawless installation for new networks.

From “Day Two”, PatchView’s comprehensive, realtime information streamlines network maintenance and optimises ongoing operations.

PatchView’s optimisation and automation of these processes translates directly into a faster progression toward “production-ready” status and real cash benefits.

Real-time Power Management

Although power management has become a critical focus area, the complexity of today’s datacenters has made efficient power management almost impossible to achieve without a sophisticated monitoring system. PatchView offers a powerful, real-time management tool, which continuously monitors power consumption, identifies and helps flatten power peaks, identifies power-hogging devices, provides policy-based power planning across cabinets, assists in determining future power consumption, and more.

As an open and flexible system, PatchView gathers information from the “smart” power strips and power sensors of practically all vendors, and displays the collected information in real time in an easy-to-use format. Just as important, the information and alerts provided by PatchView can be used as an integrated data feed for provisioning, capacity management and many additional system applications. The end result is a smooth operation running within the “blue line”, and a significantly reduced monthly power bill.

Capacity Monitoring

Every data centre is challenged by the limits of the physical infrastructure – the availability of power, space, cooling, switch ports, etc., and this constrains the amount of services that the datacenter can provide. PatchView’s capacity monitoring capabilities are essential for “stretching” the datacenter’s resources to the max. By keeping track of all equipment and services, PatchView makes it easy to trace “stranded capacities”, avoid excessive CAPEX and OPEX, and make more effective procurement decisions.

PatchView monitors the capacity and utilisation of every IT infrastructure asset, from power components through use of space, to quantities and locations of servers and network equipment. It reports the resource utilisation information in a clear, online bird’s-eye-view format to highlight capacity strain well before resources exhaustion, and delivers real-time alerts based on user-defined threshold.

The result is optimised asset utilisation, which translates into a smoother running facility and a reduction of new equipment required.

Generic support for Blade Servers

Blade servers are gaining popularity as the ultimate enabler of dense power computing. However, density represents a new monitoring challenge, as the larger number of servers per cabinet and additional physical elements (pass-through modules, built-in switching modules, etc.) increase the monitoring task significantly. RiT’s PatchView provides smooth, dynamic management of all these elements, and the PatchView Discovery Module automates the process of building an accurate virtual model of blade servers and blade enclosures.

Automated IT Equipment Discovery

A fact of life in complex data centres is the explosive growth in the number of IP-driven devices. As components become more sophisticated and new monitoring devices, such as “smart” power strips, are introduced, it becomes more and more challenging to track datacentre assets.

In this reality, automated discovery is a must. PatchView’s Automated Discovery Module pinpoints the physical location of all active devices, automatically discovering each and every IP-driven device in the network. The module discovers devices and builds an accurate database. Over time, the module tracks the status and connectivity of each device as it
moves through the asset life cycle, giving users a central console to track physical location and network characteristics (host name, IP address etc.).

IT Asset Management

An accurate picture of equipment available is a fundamental requirement for any type of effective capacity planning and IT asset management. However, availability is difficult to track in today’s complex datacenter environments.

PatchView’s “trusted source database” and its host of analysis and presentation functions are used by hundreds of companies as the basis for accurate asset management. PatchView organizes voluminous, detailed information regarding each device in the data centre, including types and quantities of equipment, inter-connectivity and interaction and not less important, the relationships and dependencies between the devices. These features range from the simple to the sophisticated, including intuitive, work-saving “one-click” actions, that initiate a complex flow of processes.

PatchView in Workspace Environments

Comprehensive Infrastructure Documentation

This is a picture of an intelligent cabling workspace with a laptop & paper logo The cabling infrastructure is a huge, sprawling asset that forms the backbone of every workspace and “people facility.” To minimise downtime and assure the flexibility of dynamic organisations, efficient cabling management is a fundamental necessity – a goal that can only be achieved when cabl ing records are accurate and up-to-date. Some organizations are required by law to comply with strict regulations regarding standards of documentation. Recognising this reality and the logic driving the regulations, many enterprises are investing significant efforts to bring their organisations into compliance.

To ease the task, PatchView offers a field-proven solution for automating most steps of the database-building process, and for automatically maintaining the integrity of database documentation – all the way from the jack level through vertical and horizontal cables, switch ports, conduits and cabling pathways.

PatchView’s continuous, automatic monitoring of the cabling infrastructure ensures that the cabling documentation is 100% accurate and up-to-date. Beyond cabling, PatchView documents infrastructure elements such as racks, cabinets, power and environmental monitoring systems, etc., to deliver an accurate, comprehensive picture of the complete
network.

Real-time Automated IT Asset Management

Today’s workspace environments must accommodate constant movement of personnel, and that represents a significant challenge for any IT department.

PatchView’s Discovery Module automates the task of discovering IT equipment (such as PCs and IP phones) and their geographical placement, eliminating the human error associated with this tedious process. Then, to keep the IT equipment information up to date, the system carries out periodic network scans and ongoing monitoring of switch traps, and uses the information collected to update its records. To round out the system, PatchView’s “smart patching” capabilities make it easy for users to keep track of the physical location and movements of high-value assets throughout the enterprise.

PatchView’s accurate, ongoing mapping makes it easy to answer questions like “where is this specific PC/server/printer?” and “how many devices do I have?” without any legwork. PatchView’s efficient dashboard tool and numerous formats for manipulating, viewing and reporting data facilitate the process of interpreting the data to guide successful decision-making.

Fault Management

PatchView’s fault management tools have been proven time and against to minimise the network downtime caused by faults in the physical infrastructure.

PatchView continuously monitors connectivity at the patching level and provides an immediate alert when it senses any faults or disconnects, giving you the exact location of the fault in real time to eliminate frustrating link-tracing marathons.

Moves, Adds & Changes (MACs)

Movement is a constant in today’s mobile, dynamic organizations – and this drives endless moves, adds and changes (MACs) for the IT staff. Flawless MAC execution requires accurate information from many fronts: service availability; infrastructure readiness; VLANs; resiliency patterns;and more. PatchView’s Automated Provisioning Tool uses sophisticated algorithms to make sense of all these elements, resulting in a streamlined and automated MAC planning and implementation process. As such, personnel can shift their focus from “how to provision” to “what to provision,” relying on PatchView’s provisioning engine to carry out all complex calculations in seconds.

PatchView also provides an array of tools to simplify less complicated MACs, assuring ideal results with a reduced manual effort.

Designed with an open architecture and comprehensive SDK, PatchView’s provisioning tool can be integrated with other vendors’ systems. Its powerful engine can be tailored to reflect the complex business rules of your own organisation, and can be integrated with the full range of business process flows and systems.

Security

PatchView provides a comprehensive set of security tools designed to help the organization succeed in its ongoing fight against suspect activity. PatchView’s security tools include real-time identification of illegal or unscheduled connects/disconnects, identification of unauthorised devices, and more.
